Ledger® Onboarding™

Your official hub to set up your Ledger hardware wallet securely and confidently.

Step 1: Unbox Your Ledger

Carefully unbox your Ledger device and verify the authenticity of the package. Ledger devices come sealed to ensure your hardware wallet is genuine. Check the hologram and security seal for any signs of tampering. Never trust a pre-owned Ledger device or one received from an unofficial source. Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase online.

Take a few moments to familiarize yourself with the components: the hardware wallet itself, the USB cable, and the recovery sheet. The recovery sheet is crucial for backup and recovery purposes. Keep it secure and offline at all times.

Step 2: Connect Your Device

Connect your Ledger device to your computer or mobile device using the provided USB cable. The device will power on and guide you through the initial setup process. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully to ensure proper initialization of your wallet.

At this stage, the device may prompt you to set a PIN code. Choose a strong, unique PIN that only you can remember. The PIN ensures your wallet remains protected even if the device is lost or stolen. Avoid writing the PIN down in an insecure location.

Step 3: Write Down Your Recovery Phrase

The recovery phrase is a list of 24 words generated by your Ledger device. This phrase is your ultimate backup, allowing you to recover your funds if the device is lost or damaged. Write these words in order on the recovery sheet provided. Do not store this phrase digitally, on your computer, or in cloud storage, as this poses a security risk.

Ensure you double-check each word and its order. Ledger devices will prompt you to verify the phrase by asking you to select words in the correct order. This step confirms that you have accurately recorded your recovery phrase.

Step 4: Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the companion application to your hardware wallet. Download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website to manage your cryptocurrencies securely. The software allows you to install apps on your device, send and receive crypto, and check portfolio balances.

Once installed, open Ledger Live and follow the instructions to pair your device. Ensure your device is unlocked and connected. Ledger Live will guide you through adding accounts for Bitcoin, Ethereum, or other supported cryptocurrencies. Each account is linked directly to your Ledger device.

Step 5: Install Apps on Your Ledger

Ledger devices support multiple cryptocurrency apps. Using Ledger Live, install the necessary apps for the coins and tokens you plan to manage. Each app isolates the corresponding cryptocurrency, adding an extra layer of security to your funds.

Do not install apps from unofficial sources. Ledger Live ensures that the apps you install are verified and secure. Regularly update apps to benefit from security enhancements and bug fixes. The device itself will prompt you if updates are available.

Step 6: Secure Your Device

Ledger hardware wallets are designed to be secure even in untrusted environments. Keep your device physically safe, avoid sharing your PIN or recovery phrase, and store it in a secure location when not in use. Physical security complements the cryptographic security Ledger provides.

Consider using a secure location like a safe or lockbox for storage. Avoid leaving your device in public areas or carrying it unnecessarily. Ledger devices are resilient, but human error can compromise security if precautions are not taken.

Step 7: Learn and Explore

Once your Ledger is set up, take the time to explore its features. Learn how to send and receive cryptocurrency, manage multiple accounts, and monitor your portfolio. Understanding your device ensures you use it effectively and securely.

Ledger provides official documentation, guides, and tutorials. Access these resources frequently to stay updated on best practices, new features, and security recommendations. Knowledge is an essential part of keeping your crypto safe.

Step 8: Advanced Security Practices

Consider additional security measures like passphrase protection, which adds an extra word to your recovery phrase for enhanced security. Ledger devices allow optional passphrase activation to create multiple hidden wallets. Use this feature if you require advanced security.

Regularly back up your recovery phrase, verify device authenticity, and avoid phishing attempts. Always double-check URLs and never enter your recovery phrase online. Ledger devices are designed to prevent such attacks, but user awareness is crucial.

Step 9: Stay Updated

Ledger continuously releases firmware and software updates to enhance security. Keep your device and Ledger Live updated. Enable notifications for updates and follow official Ledger channels for news and alerts.

Ignoring updates can leave your device vulnerable. Regular maintenance ensures your funds are protected by the latest security features. Updates are verified and signed by Ledger to prevent tampering.

Step 10: Support and Community

If you encounter issues or have questions, consult the Ledger support center. Ledger offers comprehensive guides, FAQs, and live support to assist with setup and troubleshooting. Engaging with the community can also provide insights and shared experiences.

Participate in forums, follow Ledger blogs, and learn from others’ experiences. Community knowledge can help you navigate advanced features and stay informed about security best practices.
